    Published Friday, February 3, 2012

The Indianapolis based non-profit Food Rescue has found a way to reduce the amount of unused food that is thrown away by restaurants in ten Indiana cities.  The relationships Food Rescue has established with restaurants and volunteers provides thousands of pounds of food to those in need through partnerships with several different organizations.

Hillcroft Services is very grateful to be one of the organizations in Muncie that has partnered with Food Rescue to “save” food. The Food Rescue partnerships in Muncie not only serve clients of Hillcroft, but also provide a great resource for other local nonprofits.

Food Rescue’s most recent food saving endeavor came in the form of 37,000 pounds of cookies donated by Maplehurst Bakeries. Hillcroft one of four agencies to receive nearly 10,000 pounds of snicker doodle and oatmeal raisin cookies.  Hillcroft’s portion of the rescued cookies will be divided up to be shared with other local non-profit organizations and used by Hillcroft’s programs.

OBRA Services

Hillcroft’s OBRA Services provides supports to individuals with developmental disabilities who reside in long-term healthcare facilities.  The title of OBRA Services references the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act which funds the programming.

OBRA Services provide participants the opportunity to spend time in their communities, stay connected with family and friends and improve their quality of life.  OBRA activities can include shopping trips, going out to eat, leisure and cultural events, educational activities, going to the library, sporting events, local community attractions and volunteer opportunities.

In order to receive OBRA services, eligibility must first be determined by the Bureau of Developmental Disability Services (BDDS).  BDDS may be reached at 765-288-6516.  After Hillcroft has been selected as the OBRA provider, services can begin after the participants' budget has been approved by BDDS and FSSA (Family and Social Services Administration).  This is usually a 2-3 week process.

Our highly trained staff work closely with each person served, his or her family and the nursing home facility staff to create and arrange person-centered activities based upon their individual needs and interests. All services are one-on-one with direct support professionals spending several hours per week with each person served.

Hillcroft OBRA program staff receive intense initial and ongoing training in CPR / First Aid, Universal Precautions, Core A and Core B Medication Training, Medication Administration, Positive Behavior Supports, Client Rights, Preventing Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation, Incident Reporting, Defensive Driving and Aggression Management Techniques.

Hillcroft currently provides OBRA services to nursing facilities in five East Central Indiana counties: Delaware, Madison, Henry, Grant and Blackford.
